Total Language Plus is a literature-based, innovative curriculum centered on the development of thinking and communication skills. The authors believe an integrated system is more efficient than a fragmented approach, discovery style learning is the most effective, and learning should be enjoyable. The "discover, do, drill" method is employed with activities focused on thinking skills and the development of a biblical world view.

The program contains in-depth comprehension, spelling, and vocabulary lessons. It would be overkill to do this program
in addition to a separate spelling and vocabulary curriculum. We assume a foundation for writing has already been taught, so we do not offer remedial
instruction. We do provide ample opportunities to put budding writing skills into practice. We take an application approach to grammar; therefore, if
your students cannot identity parts of speech, you will need to supplement. Writing and grammar make up a major portion of this program, but not
through drills or redundant instruction. Depending on the title chosen, a significant amount of science or history may be incorporated, but we do not claim to be a full curriculum except for language arts (spelling, vocabulary, writing, grammar, comprehension, critical thinking, and listening).
