Barbara's Note: Although Matt is alone through much of the story, a central theme is the importance of family. I appreciate the author’s characterization of Matt, showing his weaknesses and strengths. As he matures, we learn to respect him even more. The story is gentle enough for tender-hearted readers, but adventurous enough to capture our interest. (Grades 3-6)
